Happy Mail

Happy Mail is my name for the process of saving positive emails or kudos about me. I've been saving this for years, and I've also learned that I'm not the only one -- I was pleasantly surprised to discover recently that a number of my colleagues have been doing this as well.

With so many emails floating around the average technology company, chances are some of it is going to be about you, and some of it contains something warm and fuzzy that makes you happy whenever you read it. I create a folder in my email inbox, and whenever I read an email that makes me feel good (such as the one from a former CEO saying that he wanted to make a copy of me as soon as human cloning is available!), I store it here. Then I reread the Happy Mail whenever things get tough, and I need some inspiration.

If you manage people, create a Happy Mail file for each of your employees, and use it to file any complimentary emails you receive about your employees (ensuring that you forward the email to the employee when appropriate, of course). You then have a record of that person's accomplishments for use during performance review time.

Another great application: Save Happy Mail from your customers, print out the best quotes in large fonts, and hang them up on your office walls for everyone to read.
