Welcome
A couple of years ago, the term "path to profitability" became the operating buzzword for an early-stage technology startup. But well before a company can get to the point where profitability is a real consideration, the company must get a product out the door, which is where the Product Manager comes in. The Product Manager must blaze a path between the company and the customer, taking the company's initial product or service to market and returning back with a plan for the next iteration of that product and, by extension, the next phase of the company's growth.
The art of Software Product Management is in making decisions and managing their effects. With every decision, the impact to customers and prospects, other teams in the global organization, and the short- and long-term business goals must be considered. The Product Manager's job is to be sensitive to what's really important for customer success while reconciling many conflicting requirements and the ripple effect of product decisions.
At the same time, time to market is of the essence. Decisions must often be made quickly, with imperfect information. The Product Manager must take a deep breath, dive in, and blaze the company's path to its target market.
pathtomarket.com showcases some of the tools and techniques I've created in shepherding global software products from vision to reality within the startup environment. I believe in sharing what you know so that everyone becomes smarter. But this site is just a starting point: success lies in the skill of the Product Manager in applying the right tools to the situation at hand.
